My Story

It was in the 90's when the idea for Singing Yoga was born. I was a student in a yoga class where the teacher led chanting prior and after the poses. One day after the class, the teacher asked if I could teach him how to sing. When he asked, "Can you teach me how to sing so I'm not self conscious?", I replied right away without thinking, "Get on the mat." I immediately asked him to assume one of his favorite Yoga positions. Then I asked him to start singing, anything he wanted to sing.

He instantly found that while combining yoga and singing at the same time, he was able to go to the place of centeredness and he found he could sing -- effortlessly and with abandonment. That was the beginning of SingYo.

At age 7, I started yoga and at age 13, I was singing in public for my Bat Mitzvah. My grandmother, who lived until 97, taught me the yogic pranayama (breathing exercises) before I went to bed at night. Breathing and moving seemed so natural that I didn't get back into it more seriously until I was an adult. Even then I would start and stop because life got in the way. Once I practiced SingYo, the resistance to regular exercise disappeared too.

I am a classically trained singer and a certified yoga instructor from the Satchidinanda School in Yogaville, VA. I've sung and "yogied" with the famous and not so famous. I am a lifetime student of yoga and singing.

I love seeing people find new and unexpected ways of expressing their essence and joy through combining yoga and singing.
